Meteora Greece is like a different planet. The high pillars of rock which look like they are touching the sky in the otherwise flat landscape look like something out fiction. And over them the monasteries are old creation which is magnificent and very impressive. There is saying that the area of Meteora is said to have been sea once upon a time. In the 11th century the hermits were living far away from the rest of the world, they used to live in caves. Since they met fro mass once a week, they became organized. The first construction was started in 14th century and it is believed that one of the reasons was that the monks and the people needed shelter from the Turkish attacks that went on. The monk Athanasios was behind the project of Great Meteoron, which was built in 1356-1372. He had also set the rules for the monastic life. The monasteries of Meteora are situated behind picturesque Kastraki, following an uphill road in order to reach the summits of the rocks above and find them. The road is like a huge snake which winds among the ravines, hauls itself over the very few cultivated hills, glides round precipitous yellow-green rocks and arrives at Meteora.
As you go up on foot or in a car, you find that the hills give off scents at all seasons of the year. All around everything is calm and peaceful, while a light wind accompanies one’s thoughts. Right and left wild and towering rocks make their presence felt. Ancient, half-collapsed wooden ladders stick out from the very few clefts in these multi-coloured rocks, testifying to the presence of ascetics there in former times. It is said that in one of the caves, which can be seen in a rock on the right as you go up with wooden ladders hanging down, the ascetic monks used to stay for months on end without coming down at all, thus punishing their bodies for some act of disobedience or for allowing their thoughts to take flight back to the world.
The magic of the journey from Kastraki to the monasteries is sheer enjoyment. It takes about two hours and transports you into a land of dreams. The greenery of every shade terminates in idyllic lines with sheer rocks and red formations springing from it. The beauty of nature which one is enjoying is a blend of gentle southern and wild northern lines, which produce a feeling of ecstasy of the spirit. Read the rest of this entry »
